Email Hosting

What is Email Hosting?

Email Hosting is when you have a website or domain and you want to be able to receive emails addressed to that domain.

For example, if you own the domain “myfabbusiness.co.uk” you might have a website “www.myfabbusiness.co.uk”. If you wanted to be able to receive emails addressed to john.smith@myfabbusiness.co.uk, then you need to have Email Hosting.

I’m sure you’d agree that “sales@myfabbusiness.co.uk” looks more professional than something like “myfabbusiness23@gmail.com”

What are POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP?

These are the protocols used when your email client talks to the server to send or receive emails.

POP3 is the basic provision, and best for a single computer / user downloading the emails. Normally emails are only kept on the server until you download them after which they’re deleted.

IMAP4 is best used with multiple devices or computers. Emails are stored on the server and you can access them from multiple devices or webmail. You can also see which emails have already been read, replied to, etc.

SMTP is used to send emails. Email servers talk to each other using the SMTP protocol, when you send an email to the server, you use SMTP to do this.
